Oma and the Oompahs just celebrated
their 28th anniversary in the field of German/Czech music.
With a long-time repertoire of old-time polkas, waltzes, schottisches,
as well as group dances, the band has now extended itself to the modern
sounds of Germany, which includes fox-trots played with a country-western
beat. All of this combined with a few American, Spanish, Country,
and Cajun tunes sung with German lyrics keep the program interesting.
Oma has been known to toss in a “Rap” should she be challenged!
The group had its beginnings
when, after recovering from neck and back injuries suffered in an automobile
accident, Oma (Pearly Sowell) decided to purchase an accordion and rekindle
her love for the instrument she had not played since childhood.
In the interim years, she had played the French horn, flugelhorn, cornet,
church organ, and piano, and directed choirs in Guam, Kansas, and New
Braunfels—all while also raising a family. An unexpected one-night
performance at the Bavarian Village in New Braunfels became 20 years
and counting.
Whether it is show time or
dance time, Oma and the Oompahs present themselves in authentic Bavarian/German
costume.
Oma wields her accordion and
sings in her deep Marlene Dietrich voice, accompanied by Darvin Dietert
playing his one-of-a-kind style on tuba. Oma’s son, David, on percussion,
draws everything together for that “play off each other” happy sound.
